Prepared-Edge Appliqué
If you want to be sure of crisp finished edges before you ever sew a stitch, prepared-edge appliqué is for you. Using a template or other tool, you’ll turn the seam allowances to the wrong side of the appliqué with perfect precision.
Why Prepared-Edge Appliqué?
Turning edges under before sewing them to a background eliminates the surprise element of sewing pieces down: glued-up blocks look just like the finished product will, making prepared-edge appliqué a what-you-see-is-what-you-get method.
There are many variations on preparing edges for appliqué; the starch-turn method I prefer uses freezer-paper templates with spray starch to hold the seam allowances. I especially like this technique for large appliqués, such as those in the Counterbalance Quilt, and for highly geometric shapes, such as the circles in the Pineapple Rings Lap Quilt. But with a little dexterity in manipulating an iron, it works well for even the tiniest shapes.
Bias-tape makers are also invaluable for turning under the edges of long fabric strips to be appliquéd in a structured pattern such as the Cordova Table Runner or wandering lines as on the Helix Table Topper. They can even be combined with freezer-paper templates as for the Counterbalance.
